LISSA RIVERA PHOTOGRAPHS GENDER IN THE 21ST CENTURY
After Lissa Rivera's friend BJ revealed to her that he spent his time in college wearing almost exclusively women's clothing, but was lost trying to navigate a world that was seemingly open yet closed off to male displays of femininity, the two began collaborating on a photographic series that explored BJ's identity. Rivera had found her muse, and soon, a romantic partner. "Beautiful Boy" addresses questions of gender roles, feminine expression and strength, through a series of staged photographs that places viewers in a remarkably intimate and aesthetically fantastic universe. "The project is a canvas to project our desires," writes Rivera; " at times the images even become self-portraits. The camera transposes our private experiences into public expression."
